Museum of Connecticut History – Hartford, CT

Appropriate for Grades 3+ the Museum of Connecticut History displays exhibits that demonstrate the growth of the State and the role it has played in the development of the nation. Exhibits include focuses on Connecticut’s government, industrial, and military history. Currently, guided tours are not available, however the museums website provides an outline of a self guided tour as well as a scavenger hunt for the teacher and students to use while visiting. A trip to the Museum of Connecticut History is easily, and often paired with a tour of the State Capitol.

A visit to tour the State Capitol building is appropriate for Grades 3+ and is a fun, interactive way for students to learn about the history of the capitol, view artifacts that are important to Connecticut History, observe proceeding of the general assembly, tour the legislative building, and visit the Connecticut hall of fame. Free one hour tours of the building are available Monday- Friday and guidelines for a self guided tour as well as a quiz for kids are available on the building’s website.


Nathan Hale Homestead – Coventry, CT


Once the home of State hero, Nathan Hale, this site is a great field trip for students grades 2-4. The Georgian-style home has remained largely intact since owned by the Hale family and is furnished with family pieces and antiques making it a great example for students to use to understand the role the Hale family played in Connecticut History as well as understanding daily life and culture during the Revolutionary War era

Mystic Seaport – Mystic, CT


Located in Mystic, Connecticut and appropriate for students in grades 4 and 5, a day in Mystic Seaport is a great trip for students to learn about colonial life and the role of whaling and shipping played in the local community. Students can participate in a number of hands on and interactive activities at mystic seaport including unparalleled opportunities to climb on authentic whaling ships, interact with costumed role-players, and explore exhibits displaying coastal life and trade.


Submarine Force Museum – Groton, CT



Located on the Thames River in Groton, CT this museum maintains the worlds finest collect of submarine artifacts. This site is appropriate for students of all ages to learn about submarines and the role they’ve played in both State and National military history. Students will have the opportunity to tour the historic USS Nautilus and experiences the spaces that the crews of the ship lived during their voyages below sea level.
